Watch: Dramatic Rescue Aboard a Cruise Ship by the Coast Guard

Ever wonder what happens if someone happens to get sick in the middle of the ocean and has to be evacuated? It only happens in rare instances, but if a passenger can’t wait until the next port and is too far from land to be reached quickly by boat, then the Coast Guard will send a helicopter.

From there, the crew will either land on the ship’s helipad or — more dramatically — elect to hoist the passenger up into a helicopter hovering aboard deck.

To give you an idea of what this looks likes, we found this amazing video of a mid-ocean evacuation. This is reportedly aboard the Carnival Sensation. As you can see, with the highly trained Coast Guard, picking up a passenger from a ship takes less than five minutes — allowing them to get to medical help that much faster.
